Atlas transfer case

What gear ratio would yall suggest for a bouncer LS th350 an 4.56 in the diff 44 inch tires with about 400hp. Going to built a 500hp 6.0 this winter. I wheel a lot of dirt hills an need wheel speed.

if it helps, I've got a 3.8 atlas in mine with 5.38s and 42s running a 500hp 6.0. it gets plenty of wheel speed. I'm no bouncer, but she'll get some wheel speed if I need it.

not saying I have the perfect setup, just trying to help with some info

I vote 3:1! That's what I ran and it worked well for me 3rd was pretty fast and 1st was low enough to ease up on stuff and crawl some.

About how much hp did that buggy have? An I think I've seen somewhere that u had 4.88 gears in the diffs. U don't think the 4.56 in mine will need the 3.8 gears do ya?

Re:

x3. . . . I am curious though in your engine thread your goal was the hero case... Why the change

I can't afford a hero case right now. Being i need a little more motor and a tcase. I can go with the atlas an build my motor for about the same price as a hero.

An I figure if the atlas did give me trouble I could fix it an still sell it for a few hundred less than what paid an get a hero then.

I know lots of people who seem to believe that 2:1 t-case and rockwells are the PERFECT ratio for V8 rigs with decent power. I'm not sure that I believe that it is PERFECT but I do think that it is the closest to perfect that is possible without t-case ratios that until recently were only made available with a Hero. So if we go by that school of thought the perfect t-case * axle ratio is somewhere around 13:1.

3:1 case * 4.56 axle = 13.68:1.

I am currently 3:1 in the case with rockwells which puts me around 20:1. I have 400hp. I can romp it in low range in any gear but sometimes I do wish I had a bit more wheel speed in 3rd gear. The thing is that I can't always hold 1st gear high on a steep hill with traction which is 16.7:1. So that means that somewhere between 16.7:1 and 20:21 is a small zone where I wouldn't be happy which is why I think that 13:1 is still a bit too high for 400hp.

But 20:1 would be WAAAY too low with 500hp like you say you are going to. I would definitely want closer to 13:1 if I had 100 more hp. Hence my suggestion to do 3:1. I think you could live with a slight lack of power (if it even existed) in 3rd high until you bought another 100hp.

My personal theory is that 17:1 is my ideal ratio. But without putting Gearhart gears in my axles (which I can't afford) and without going to a Hero (which I also can't afford) that ratio is impossible to achieve.

Just my $0.02.

Just want to add this caveat ... I'm not a bouncer. I'm sure a lot of these high-hp bouncers are running higher than my personal "ideal."

Never put it on a dyno but atleast 450hp at the crank. Yes it had 4.88 but there isn't a lot of difference in 4.56. I had a 3.8 case first and stayed in 2nd and 3rd and would just ride the limiter way to much!

only thing I wish was different on mine so far would be an OD trans. would be nice to have a little more mph in low range

You're at the same 20:1 I am and wish you had a little more speed in 3rd low like I do. That should tell the OP a lot. Even moreso when you consider that an OD gear would put your low range at 13.9:1 which is where the OP would be with a 3.0 case.

yes sir. that's why I posted. was hoping it would help others. I'm not even close to bouncer status :flipoff1: but figured some #s and opinions might help someone.

I'm happy with my setup, but the mph in low range would be the only change I would do if I could.

thanks for the #s too. it's cool seeing how it plays out on paper
