ORV Leadership

I'm going to take this comment and start a discussion.

It's from this thread http://www.nw-wheelers.com/forum/showthread.php?p=653844#post653844 Sustainable workgroup study MEETINGS this week! posted by japerry.

I have a question for any person that follows what we (ORV users) do on here (NW-Wheelers.com) and out in the "offline world"......Reiter, Walker, Evans, Elbe, Tahuya, Naches, etc.

What do you want to become of the leadership in out ORV community?

I think it's fantastic that there are folks like crash, gibby, pokey, crazy daze, nowires (there are others) that have taken it upon themselves to make a difference, and leading by example. But their following lacks......by no fault of their own. It's "our" fault.

I'm not a leader. I consider myself one of nowires "associates". I also believe that crash, gibby, pokey and crazey daze have done their fair share in greatly helping the ORV community, as a whole.

Why don't we help these guys out more? Can you help these guys out more?

Look at it this way. There is a need for hierarchy. Everyone on this board can "team up" with your person of choice and HELP THEM! Whatever that may be.......no pressure.

I don't go to meetings, **** that!, I don't do trail maintenance, it's bullshit! (My opinion only!) But I have helped financially. I have helped by relaying information to mis-informed ORV users. I have made difficult decisions to NOT do something "bad/illegal/fun" with the greater good in mind.

WHAT CAN YOU DO? WHAT HAVE YOU DONE LATELY?

I will continue to help "my guy"........you too should pick "a guy" and help him.

This should not be looked at as separation. It's actually inclusion in the process......without the political BS and headaches. You help your guy, your guy helps us all.

PenisVagina.:D

SO what happens when guys who are some sort of leadership get fed up--and give up? Who is going to take there places when they are gone?

Lets face it without some soft of leadership you are not going to go anyplace, the cummuntiy isn't going to go anyplace--backwards if anything.

I am out there to support the sport in general and that is also the other reason why i do so many differant things. I joined 2 clubs and became actuive member in both in one way or an other then i joined the PNW and i know some of you hate them but they are helping to a degree. I also joined RTW ro help with my local wheelin home because i due use it lots. I might now have a lot of money like some of you other but to me time is needed as well and i can give time.

That's easy to explain guys. The thread is posted on a board that's based on **** talkers and non wheelers. How many of them would care to read that thread?....Same thing goes for this thread Mark, if you want to be effective you should also post it in other places than here. If you only intended it for drama purposes then you're in the right place.:awesomework:

I think Mark posted this in a place that has a local appeal. Even our local section of Pirate's board doesn't get much action and the people that I do see posting in that section are also here.

This is the best venue to reach as many PNW wheelers (including web wheelers) that there is right now.

I think for the south Puget Sound area, WOW is making great strides in showing leadership, on and off the web. Their frequent presence on the trails doing work parties, constant attendance at the DNR and Forest Service meetings and their positive influence on the trails as users is a great example of new leadership coming up.

I've personally had to take a much less active role lately because of work and family, they have to come ahead of my hobbies. I still like to stay informed but I'm glad we have orgs/associations like the PNW, WOW, RTW and clubs like Dogpound, Quadrapaws, Timber Tamers and lots of others, that have come together to present a more unified front when dealing with land management agencies.

Trail maintenance and work parties do a lot more than just fix (regardless of how you feel about "fixing") trails. What they do is show user support and responsibility so that the land management agencies are more willing to work with us rather than against us.

Look at where things are heading at Elbe right now. Work is being done on and around the busywild, not to close it down, but to ensure that it stays open and it's not getting paved.. The Swamp Trail is getting longer and harder in a sustainable condition. We're making slow progress on the Rainier Vista getting the rock work done. A new trail called the Inner Alder Loop is now in place. There are not just repairs to trails, but IMPROVEMENTS to trails including new obstacles and legal bypasses around some of the most difficult obstacles so that we can maintain our challenges. We don't win every battle, it's a game of give and take on both sides and the more we give, the more we're given.

Where I think we still lack in leadership as individuals on the trails. That's not only our own driving techniques but in educating and policing those that we see on the trail doing things that damaging? How can we have people camping in bootleg sites with illegal fires on weekends when dozens of groups are going by them and those people are STILL doing the same thing. How can we have all the signs shot up or have literally hundreds and hundreds of shells on the ground at the rock pit on the 9 road, or near the start of Gotcha an no one says anything or does anything to stop it. How can we have so much garbage on out trails that we need multiple clean up work parties throughout the year. You can't even blame this on the partying high school kids when the garbage is on the trails that require modified off road vehicles to even get to the place where the garbage is. We need to be willing to step up and say something to people that are tossing garbage, driving off the trail, winching without tree savers etc, cutting trees out of the way, and report those that are unwilling to listen to the authorities to let them deal with the problem users. It's this leadership that will get to those people that want nothing to do with clubs, the web or work parties and just want to wheel. If you see someone tossing a beer can, pick it up, put it in a garbage bag and give it BACK to the offender along with a nice comment. Apparently you don't have a bag for your garbage, so here's your can and a garbage bag for you."

So why not post in those other places too? There are lots of people who don't come here for one reason or the other.

Not suggesting that posting there too is a bad thing but lots of people won't go to Pirate either, for one reason or another.

Do you pick up trash on the trail when you are out wheelin'??? Do you tell folks that are doing something that hurts the sport to knock it off??? If you do, then you are helping for the greater good...

I am just mocking the **** I have been told through the years from people who belong and dont belong to the 4x4 associations around this area. And yes i have picked up my fair share of garbage, and also have tried to let people know thier actions will cause problems. have gotten a bunch of crap from them so **** it all. I dont get out much at all anymore so I am now just a web wheeler.
But my hat is off to Crash, maybe Pokey (ha ha) for what they do and try to do. I pretty much have just went back to street cars, they havent outlawed those yet.......

I think there's alot of good folks on this board, sure there's alot of smack but it's often entertaining. I started coming to this one cuz it seems to be way more active than any other local boards I could find, in terms of # of users and actual posts. Most of the other sites I've found are pretty dead.:tumbleweed: I agree it ought to be posted up all over, cuz it's a good point that needs to be made.:awesomework:

yes, Yes, YES!!!:tits3:

Get pissed, disagree, discuss, brainstorm, ask questions, find resolutions.

Keep this thread on the top.......or cross link it, if you think that will help.:awesomework:

Someone. Anyone. That's the beauty if this thing we have. No experience necessary, just get out and do it.

Drama is effective.:; Look at Brain H.:haha:

If I could post the Russian Kill Vid and some Gay Tranny Porn in this thread to gain posts and views......I would.

The point is not to change everybody's mind......that's unrealistic. But if one person affects another, and another, and so on......this thread worked.

Did I affect you? Was it effective?

Someone. Anyone. That's the beauty if this thing we have. No experience necessary, just get out and do it.

Oh, experience is highly recommended! Dealing with land management agencies takes a lot more tack and skill than might be imagined. There's a political game to play. Getting behind someone who knows what they're doing and learning the ropes is a powerful tool.

I'd love to get out and do more for the wheeling effort but as it sits with graveyard shift most of the meetings/get togethers are either too early for me to get too or so late I'd have to miss beginning of shift.

Screw the meeting dude! That's such a small part of it. And clean-ups should happen ALL THE TIME, BY EVERYONE.....no scheduled dates necessary.

How about this? The next time you're riding bitch and the driver drops a beer can.....ask him to stop and you pick it up. Or, if after the day of wheeling is over and you see some young kids ready to start their night wheeling/partying.......go up to them, drink a beer/have a smoke with them, ask them what trails they're going to run, which rig is their's. Then make a simple comment about staying on the trail or picking up trash or that there's cops up here......and walk away. The affect could be bigger than you think.

Getting behind someone who knows what they're doing and learning the ropes is a powerful tool.

And like I said, no experience necessary. :; Taking on any proteges there Gibby?

Remember.....pick "a guy" and help him. Someone that has read this thread just might pick you.

I have a guy in my club learning the ropes. He's been at every WOW meeting as our club rep and is the PR rep for WOW, so he's definitely getting his feet wet and learning the ropes.

I did notice that the lower power lines were very clean of garbage...maybe closing the gate was a really good idea!!!!!!:awesomework::awesomework:
