The Dirt Squirrel v. 2.0 -- Even Dirtier

Looking awesome!

Does that Krylon Rust Tough rattle can hold up well? I don't have a garage/ shop to store my rig in and the paint has faded more and more over the years. It's about time to freshen it up.

I thinks it holds up pretty well. When its not getting used, the truck is always in the shop, but for the most part its a nice paint. I mainly use it for ease of application. It sprays in a "|" pattern rather than a "o" like cheaper cans of paint. My local Napa carries it for about $5 a can.

Hence the name of my build thread! It's looking great though...can't wait to see how it works.

Curious...do you get a drone or bad resonation/vibration in the sheet metal in the cab driving it around? That's the biggest reason easleycrawler cut the roof off of his. Just wondering if you're getting it with the way yours is set up.

Carry on...

There is a slight drone. I dont DD it, so i dont notice it much. The worst part about this new build is all the creaking from the metal on metal contact. Not too bad, but definitely noticeable. Ill just turn up the tunes to drown it out. Ill report back once i have more set time in it.

Good deal

Thank you

The drone and echo was terrible in my rig. I wish I could've kept the roof, for looks anyways, but since it's been cut off, I like it more, especially now that I don't have to listen to all the echo, rattling and drone. Your rig is definitely in my top 5 favorite yota rigs of all time.

Thanks man. Its been tough figuring out everything, but the payoff will be happening on Friday. Cant wait to see how it does.

I have a roll of dynamat knockoff stuff that i could stick to the roof, but i dont think it will out that much. I guess i got used to it in my last rig.

Long late night in the shop last night. Bought and installed the new starter. last one tested bad. Installed the lube locker rear diff seal (still need to add fluid). Re-bled the brakes and now i have a nice firm pedal. Finally cut the drivers bed side off the donor bed and got it cut/trimmed/hacked up to fit. The bedsides really complete the look IMO.

I have a long list of little **** i need to get done before i can load it on the trailer tonight.

I think one of the other reasons I like looking at this thread so much is I'm jealous of the amount of space you have to work in. I just wish I could stand back and look at what I'm doing like you can.

I was watching American Pickers this week and they visited a guy in OR that is a part of the Seattle Cossacks. He mentioned how most people get butterflies before they start something new, but said when he was starting with the Cossacks he felt like he had bald eagles flying around in his stomach. Just thought that was fitting being this close to the first outing when you're wondering what you might have forgotten to do along the way...

For reference this is him riding the bottom middle Harley...

lol. Yep. I wrote out a huge list trying to think of everything to finish up before tomorrow and one more for the trip next weekend that isnt necessary for the shakedown. Im sure there is something im forgetting and am just hoping whatever it is is small enough to not ruin my day.

I took the Squirrel out for a shakedown run at Hidden Falls Adventure Park on Friday for a day run. Picked up Brian and the Raisin and made it to the park around 10. Proceeded to hit a few trails and picked up Scott once he got to the park. Truck worked well with a few issues that i need to address before this weekend. Didnt break anything catastrophic and it went back on the trailer under its own power (always a good thing when on its first trip out). Oh and it didnt catch on fire like the last time.

Vid that Scott put together.

Some of the issues that need to be ironed out:
1. It ran hotter than i would have liked it to (around 235). I dont know if this is due to an air pocket still trapped in there somewhere to due to the smaller radiator/fan combo than what i was running last time. More on this later.

2. I guess the arms on the sway bar loosened up causing one side to strip out about 20% of the splines on one arm. The bar is fine, just the aluminum stripped. The rig felt super stable with the sway bar connected, but from the looks of it was limiting my flex in the rear. The front was doing most of it. Im going to leave it off this weekend and see how it feels in comparison.

3. Need to trim the from fenders more as the tires made contact and sliced a few lugs in half.

4. Need to seal off the area where my right leg is near the center console as the exhaust right under there was pretty warm. Its wrapped, but needs some type of barrier and not just open.

Other than those issues, i'd call it a successful shakedown. Had a good time and learned a lot about the rig. The tuned coilovers from Accutune are awesome. This thing floats when bombing down the fire roads. The belly is low at 19" and i did hit it on a few ledges, but it didnt keep me from making it up the obstacle.

More on the overheating issue. Last night i changed out the water pump to another one i had on the shelf. This time around i looped the heater core ports and ran the steam lines back to the radiator. Bled the system and watched it creep up to 215 just at idle. I connected my tablet with the Dash Command App to the OBDII port and saw that the coolant temp was about 190. Thats a 25 degree difference. the gauge is picking up the reading from the rear passenger side head and the PCM is getting the reading from the front of the drivers side head. Which one is right? I still think i have some air trapped in there somewhere so Im going to try to get that out tonight. It has a 160 degree thermostat in it so it shouldnt get anywhere near that at idle. The fan was off.

I was always told that the port in the passenger rear head will give you the hottest readings because of the way the coolant flows. Not sure if it true or not but it might help explain the difference you are seeing.

Buggy came out killer!!

Thanks man. Other than the overheating issues, it went up everything easily.

I wonder which one i should pay more attention to? In any event, its getting too hot too fast just sitting there at idle.

If it makes you feel any better, my gauge reads 150° right now. It's 80° in the garage right now but the engine hasn't been run. I don't know what the issue is but my gauge will peg out at over 250° while obdII shows 194. Also, mine gets warmer at idle, once I bump up the rpm's it drops quick.

I think I'd take the gage apart and spin the needle back a little :****:

Re:

My Guage sender in passenger head always ran hot. OBD was normal. Eventually tapped the water pump on engine side of thermostat, always identical readings from then on. This go round, I'm going to run off the mast can-bus system, using all factory senders.

Lonestar Toyota Jamboree 2017 Trip Report

Another Jambo in the books and another year where my skin is stained oompa loompa orange from all the dust, but wouldnt have had it any other way. Weather was unseasonably cool for May in TX and it was awesome. The Squirrel performed great and kicked ass on every trail. No major carnage from the group other than one sheared tie-rod end on Daniels toyota. Never seen one sheer off before. I made a couple small character dents on the sheet metal, but other than that no issues. Ran 190* most of the day even with me beating on it. I guess the new water pump and rerouting the steam lines did the trick.

Pics.
Loaded up Chris's truck and took off early Thursday morning.

Some stuff that needs attention. Tires got into the rear bedsides some. Need to trim out 1/2" or so at the top. Need to make a panel to enclose the center console area. Bitch is hot inside the cab. Also needs some expanded metal in the footwells to keep rocks out of the cab.

Next trip is to K2 on Memorial weekend. Plenty of time for some finishing touches.

What did you use for rock lights? Mine are getting replaced while re-doing everything else but can't decide what to use...... on a side note, went to Gilmer for my first ride ever and with the rain it got supper slick. Rain + my inexperience = Me rolling down Dewoody! It was my first roll over and I want to go back for some redemption.
