So what happens now? I have to drain the tanks and pay shipping to send it back, but no idea if I will get a replacement or refund.

They are not exactly clear. They are fiberglass. It appears you won't be able to get them any more.

Attention: All Retailers, Distributors and Users of Composite Cylinders manufactured by The Lite Cylinder Company,

Subject: Emergency Recall Order

The US Department of Transportation has issued an "Emergency Recall Order" for all LPG composite cylinders manufactured by The Lite Cylinder Company as per the following Emergency Order No. 2013-002. The recall notice specifically identifies those cylinders manufactured under DOT-SP 14562 (and DOT-SP 13957 as authorized therein), DOT-SP 13105, any cylinder re-qualified under H706, and any cylinders manufactured under M5729.

Lite Cylinder Company has submitted a Petition for Review with DOT seeking to amend several portions of this Recall Order. It is unknown as to when or to what extent, if any, portions of this recall may be modified. Until such time, users of this product are directed to immediately cease use of the cylinders identified in the recall.

All cylinder sizes are involved in this recall: 10#, 20#, 25# and 33#

Please note that the directive states "Under no circumstances should a cylinder described in this emergency recall order be filled, refilled, or used for the transportation of hazardous materials." The cylinder's identifying markings may be found on the label affixed to the dome of the cylinder.

To effectively comply with this recall, cylinder owners must:

1. Take proper safeguards in identifying and handling the affected cylinders identified in this order.

2. Cease use of all specified cylinders until notified of DOT response to Petition for Review.

3. Arrange to have all propane gas removed from cylinder. This should only be done by qualified persons, trained in handling cylinders in accordance with Federal regulations. (Note: All propane dispensing agents should meet this criteria.) This person must discharge all gas, purge, and remove the valve per the recall.

4. Return the empty, purged, valve-less cylinders, to the manufacturer, freight prepaid, at:

The Lite Cylinder Company
139 Southeast Parkway Court
Franklin, TN 37064

Please note that Lite has petitioned to amend Recall Order to allow specified cylinders to be field destroyed. We will promptly advise if Order is so amended.

While Lite is in sharp disagreement with the extraordinary and overwhelming harshness of this action, we will make every reasonable effort to comply. We clearly recognize there are associated financial implications as well as considerable inconvenience to our loyal and valued customers. Our team is currently trying to assess solutions to address these concerns and will communicate a response at the earliest possible date.

I might just adapt mine to run on gas grill tanks come to think of it :dunno:,,,won,t have to deal with inbreeders and will have room to run 2 of em anydamnway ;D

I've had tons of issues with mouth-breather propane fillers but I kind of learned how to deal with them. A, I only go to stations that charge by the gallon. That way they can't charge me for any more than their gauge says. The places that charge by the tank are a ripoff even if you do get a full fill. B, when they don't open the breather on the top of the tank, I ask them to. If they instinctively try to close that valve the first time a little vapor comes out, I simply ask them not to. I then just ask them to close it once I see a steady stream of vapor. Most of the time they don't truly know what they're doing anyway so they're glad for the instruction. C, I learned what a full tank feels like in terms of weight. If it doesn't feel full when they give it back to me I tell them kindly that it doesn't feel full. If they have issues I kindly ask to speak to their manager who always comes out himself and finishes filling it.

I learned from my brother's buggy that there are some issues with using the grill tanks. SOME of the grill tank attachment fittings have a small regulator valve that prevents enough LIQUID flow to run the engine for a long period. It will freeze up and cut off all flow if this valve is left in place. Once we found this out we simply used an appropriately size phillips head and hammer to literally bash that valve out of the fitting. We also found that, to get LIQUID propane out of them we had to run them upside down since they have no internal pickup tube. But then we also found that, when you exchange tanks out such as you would do with Blue Rhino, you don't always get a full tank back, probably for the same reasons you already stated. I've found this to be true when I exchange tanks at Lowe's for my grill at home also. Again, I've learned what a full tank feels like and if I don't get one I simply ask for another before they close the gate. Still annoying though.

I went to EFI on my new buggy and miss my propane. While I don't miss the headaches of trying to fill tanks before a ride, I feel they were smaller headaches than the fuel vaporization, pump, breather, DBW, and injector issues I have had to deal with while on the trail. I will be switching back eventually.

looks to me the Lite cly company.is getting railroaded by the DOT.

It would be interesting to know if the owner / ceo had any political affiliations considering the current events surrounding the IRS, DOJ, Apple, Gibson Guitar, the AP, and Carl Rosen.

The order applies to anyone who has these tanks or uses or fills
Fine is 175k per violation
The owner is a 80 year old man that was a offroader from Cal
DOT found that he had some problems and he did not report them
He has or is filing chapter 13 that is the word locally

had one split in the center where its molded together last year at Harlan...Got one left and never had any issues with it yet...

YEP,,,,decided I like runnin on propane to much to stop,,,,,jus gonna get me some aluminum tanks and do the "guess on my propane level shuffle" I reckon ;D

Here is what we are callin a "clear" tank yall,,,,the red line is where the tanks are FULL at,,,,and the black line is were "most' places I,ve used over the years say is full :dunno: ,,,I put those marks on both my tanks in an effort to help folks fill em up properly for me ;D

If you look close at the bottem of the tank you can see the liquid propane in it,,,and I,ve had a few folks tell me the tank was FULL with level 2 to 3 inches UNDER my black mark on the tank ::)

and at 2 or 3 inches under this black mark I say the tank is barely over half full,,,,

It was nice runnin pane all those years without worryin bout runnin out on the trail or havin to guess how much was in em ;D

I just spoke to
Darrel Reifschneider Owner of Lite Cylinder
And there is no return compensation for tanks
What a Joke

is there any way you could set up a fill station from your home propane tank?

If you run a line off the bottom of the tank you can get a smaller tank mostly full. Technically I think you're supposed to have a license to do that though. With a pump you can get the tank all the way full.
