new homeowner grade riding mower

got the youngest daughter to help me clean it up real good.. found mfg date of may 2012 on it.

We took a spin around the yard and im very happy.

Plastics are a little dull, theres a plug in one tire and some paint has peeled off the deck and theres a good bit of surface rust on in.

it has a brand new battery too.

nothing an afternoon with a wire wheel wont fix!

Good deal, saved ya some money over a new Poulan or Cub. I know everybody's opinions and experiences differ, but out of the few I personally know that's had/has Cub mowers, none of em can say they've had no problems out of them.

I knew you'd see that. Lol. The nut fell off while I was mowing. But I keep the deck all the way up so it doesn't really matter. It's back on now.

Lol Im just picking. Every brand has top tier and lower tier models, my two friends that have Cubs have lawn tractor styles, unsure of specific model, just heard em bitch about em before "fawkin piece of **** Cub" and so on.

Gerald said it pretty good tho, anything made within the last 10 years should be decent quality. But as my suggestion if it were me, I'd much rather choose a used low-hour, generic Deere in good shape for $700 over $1300 for a new Poulan or Cub. Yer essentially getting the same thing, maybe even a little better, might as well put that extra $600 in yer pocket. OP should be happy with his purchase, $700 for a 4 yr old mower with under 100 hrs aint bad at all.

well, just took the deck off to give it a good lookin over and sharpen the blades... no point in sharpening... one of em is about 2" shorter on one end than the other!

15 minutes with a putty knife and its for the most part completely bare of paint.

Theres a weld patch where one of the spindles mounts that wasnt visible in a once-over inspection...also the spindles are both in pretty bad shape...

Looks like the rebuild kit is $213... so im gonna be 900+ into it...

edit: found that kit much cheaper elsewhere so not so bad!

Lol what luck. I would have tried to find one on craigslist that looked like it had been kept in a garage its whole life and owned/cared for by a responsible adult. Buying one from a pawn shop with faded plastic and surface rust is a sign that previous owner wasn't very responsible and did not store it inside - big signs of neglect in areas of maintenance/upkeep too. Glad it's gonna be a cheap fix though.

nah man, stuff thats found at pawn shops is always babied and treated as a prize posession by a fine upstanding citizen!! :****:

plastics werent very bad at all. used one of those headlight restore kits that I had laying around in the garage and it looks pretty good now!

$125 in parts and also got a new pto cable too...

spoent the last couple hours going at the Deck with a wire wheel and its down to bare metal and getting primed after it sits in the shade and cools down for a few minutes. found 2 small weld patches and the dent from when the blade broke LOL

I put a set of Copperhead standard blades on mine before I sold it and mowed twice with it. Good blades, $25 shipped on ebay.

I got a whole deck rebuild kit for $85 shipped off of amazon. new spindles, blades, and belt.

But I still skimp on mowers to by jeep parts that get used like 4 or 5 weekends a year if im lucky!

But Deere is a reliable name in my opinion. Much bigger used market so it's easier to find one super clean and taken care of on the cheap. If they all are close to the same price, I'll choose the more reputable brand. Never really heard of a Deere being a piece of ****. I'd be interested in a link to what you read about JD engines going downhill, also.
