Southern Four Wheel Drive
October 2015 Newsletter

Fall is here my friends...........

If the temperatures haven't told you then maybe, it's those things hanging in the trees changing colors on the mountain tops. Fall's a great time of year in the South. The World Series is almost here, football season has kicked off, deer season is loose and wheeling is even more appealing.
For me it seems like our annual Dixie Run really sets the tone for Fall wheeling. How about it this year? Another amazing Run put together by SFWDA. 29 year running and I must say it seems like it only gets better. I'd like to take a second and thank everyone who was able to make it out this year and to all the volunteers who took time out their day to make it all happen.
I don't know if you had a chance to look at all the pictures on the Facebook page and our website message board but they're great. It looks like there were some pretty sweet rides rolling around Golden Mountain. If you haven't had a chance to check it out I definitely would. There's member pics as well as photos from Ricky B Photography and Image Off Road Photography. We even had a compilation video made by the Stones River Jeep Club of all their photos. Other videos include the 1st, 2nd & 3rd place runs up Copperhead Trail. So maybe you didn't make it? Then pretend you were by scoping all that out and acting like you did. "Dude you weren't there." "Bull crap, I saw that guy in the pink tank top". Boom! Your argument is null and void.
If you still aren't able to convince your friends you were there, get your ride together and make it a priority to go next year. That way you have no excuse! I remember at one time in life I was down for two years putting my junk back together. I promise you you'll have a blast and make friends you'll keep for a lifetime. It truly is a Southern tradition. For the ones that did go, thank you again and make sure to post up on the Facebook page so we can either make up stories like we there or share it with the ones that were. Either way we'd love to see them.

Dixie Run 29 is a Huge Success.
Thank You to everyone for your support!
That's right, now that we have reviewed the results of the event we can say for sure that Dixie Run 29 was a hit. We broke almost all prior records for this long time event. With just under 800 total attendees and 487 rigs we have pushed this event to another level raising more money than ever before. Not only did we raise a considerable amount of money for our Association we have also added many new members including 15 new Premium Members. Thank you to each and every one of you who came out and enjoyed Golden Mountain Park together as part of the SFWDA family.
What will the money raised do for our sport and community, well that is actually up to you all; our loyal members, clubs, and OHV parks. That's right, the SFWDA is a non-profit organization and as such we have a Grant Program for all active members to utilize. These funds are offered in grants up to as much as $5,000 per applicant for a variety of uses. Apply soon and get your your group involved. Grants are useful to educate enthusiasts, maintain and develop OHV trails, construct OHV park improvements, and more.
In case you missed it or you would like to check out photos from the event and look for your rig, take a peek at our Official Photographer for the event Image Off Road Photography. These great folks have provided hundreds of images for us all to browse and purchase.

United Four Wheel Drive Associations & Off-Road Business Association to Collaborate as Land-Use Advocates

&

The United Four Wheel Drive Associations (UFWDA) and the Off-Road Business Association (ORBA) have agreed to a formal arrangement that will allow the groups to coordinate policy as they strive to work together to protect access to lands, roads and trails for off-road enthusiasts. The groups have often collaborated in the past at the national level on projects of common interest. The new arrangement will enable the two national organizations to cooperate more closely to create a stronger approach to advocating for increased access to motorized recreation on public and private land. Ohio River Four Wheelers Grant Update

An update on the Ohio River Four Wheelers grant project from back in August. This photo of Old Fincastle Road illustrates the effective prevention of further erosion as implemented by volunteers of the ORFW and a small grant by SFWDA.
"After three months trail repair is still in good shape and it looks like the water is running in the direction that it was directed toward. Water bars have settle in good into the ground. Thanks SFWDA for the grant and the continue support to ORFW and the DBBB"
- Aarron Roddy (ORFW)

Coppenger Cove Cleanup

While it may have rained all day and weather conditions were less than desirable a few very dedicated and passionate SFWDA members made their way through the gorgeous Cove trails and helped do way more than expected. The group met up early at the Trials Training Center and after a quick meeting they hit the trail. After a full day working together this small group managed to bring out a mound of trash. Just check out all the bags they filled up. Plans are now in development to improve strategies and infrastructure to do all we can at keeping this amazing area open to the public.

Tech Tip

Question: Why should I air down before hitting the trail?
Answer: Send them this picture.

From our friends at 4 Wheel Parts.
This is a great graphic, very simple, and worth sharing.
It has been reported that it was made by inking the tire and slowly lowering it down onto the paper.
