OK I am trying to get people at work to understand how they can drive better in extreme conditions ie. Icy roads

Any ideas would be great, I have my own ideas but I like other peoples input I am going to put a list together for people.

Tell them to stay at home.

Honestly, when conditions get bad around here, tell em to go to a empty parking lot and get the feel of what its like driving in slick conditions. Tell them to spend a good 2-3 hours there practicing everything you could possibly, do, stopping, turning accelerating and whatever else. Then practice on backroads.

Leave lots of room, dont slam on the breaks, and take corners really slow are important ones. And remind them, just cuz its 4wheelin drive doesnt mean it stops on a dime.

I prolly forgot a couple things but thats a start anyways

When I'm on the backroads driving in icy conditions, I sometimes make imaginary stop signs for myself to see if I can stop before said object. Similar to making up a panic situation. If I can't stop before my imaginary object, it's time to slow down.

Snow and ice require practice, and 4wd and ABS really don't help that much on ice. Your gonna slide around regardless. Snow though is fun.

I like Cody's idea, go to a parking lot and see what your vehicle does.

Thanks alot...I usually tell people to not use your breaks but your gears. If you are in four lo or hi shift to first and let off the gas once you start slowing down then slightly apply the brakes.

X2

Ashley would yell at me for doing that, trying to stop for no reason. I would "test the waters" just about every time I changed neighborhoods or areas I was driving in for stopping, and sometimes even acceleration to get a feel for how slick the roads are. She would get mad at me like I was goofing off (until I explained it to her), but I honestly think that when I know how easy or hard it is to make the vehicle slide, I have a better idea of the road conditions than the next guy. Here I thought I was the only one who did that...

I used to go practice in parking lots a lot too, but the cops usually think you're only out there to do donuts and crap, so watch out for that one.

Oh, also I use a combination of gears and light brakes to slow down. Although, this is hard to accomplish in an automatic usually. Even if you manually shift it down, sometimes they shift so jerky that it will actually do more harm than good by breaking traction when it tries to shift.

I cant even get my wife out in those conditions but that is what I like to do is test things out. I live in Marsyville and a few years ago when I still had my jeep we had some snow...then it did the normal thing and it turned into ice. I took my jeep out to see how it would do going up icy hills. I just finished modifying it with front and rear ARB's and 4:56's, SYE and SOA with 33inch LTBs and I had just aired my tires down to about 10 psi. I was watching all these big ole f-350's, and chevy 2500's sliding off of 52nd and I started to smile. There was a bunch of people on the sidewalk being entertained...so me being the smart ass that I am...put my rig in 4 Lo....turned my ARB's on and crawled up the hill at about 5mph....people were looking like how the hell did he just do that.....I dont know why I thought that was funny:D

you have ay too much free time

All excellent suggestions, one I like to share is, if you have to be out in it, and you have 4x4 or front wheel drive, is to slightly give it the gas if you start to skid. This should pull you out of it, then slow down more

I was doing that in my Toyota when some of the super steep hills around here were solid ice. There were kids sledding on the side roads off the main hills, so lots of people out, and lots of cars trying, but going no where. I'm only locked up in the back, but I was able to walk right up the hills without problems too. I thought it was funny.
