you must have some weld still attached. i did a dye penetrant test to verify i had ground enough to have crack 360 deg around.

another option is to chuck it up in a lathe and cut the weld off to the crack line...if ya get all the weld cut and the press relieved it should fall apart.

Hippy--the 60 stuff is ALOT harder to get out than the 44 stuff---its same but a lil different.

It's a bazillion times more time consuming than a 44, I can straight up grind the weld off of a 44 and have the C's off both sides in about 15 or 20.

My method in your case johnathan, would be to use a acetalyne torch and cut a 45 all the way around the C, right at the edge of the C, then shoot 2 or 3 cut's through the axle tube, it will fall out with 2 or 3 good shot's with a hammer and drift at that point. I prefer the 45 degree torch method, so once you get the tube out, you grind the torch mark's clean, now you have a nice fillet, where you can really lay the weld in there and not just on the outside. It really makes it a bitch if the front end ever get's cut and turned again, but it's stronger than factory.

x-2. I have heard of needing to go that route but I guess I was lucky the times I have done it--but can see how it could possably need to be done.
 
basacially the same process. i do stuff a hundred times bigger and harder than a diff using the same methods.

like sleeving a propulsion shaft for an aircraft carrier...same thing only bigger.

darius has the same method using a torch vice a lathe...

basically, but a torch and a grinder is about $100, a lathe big enough to spin a housing is a little more money.

The jack stands are fine, and the wood can be removed as it doesnt support any weight. it was only there as I jacked up the ass end to get the tires off but it didnt get any load then either. ive seen worse :eeek:
 
Well getting the tube out of the inner C was pretty damn easy. I dont have a torch, plasma, or a press so I used a grinder, BFH and a sawzall. First I sprayed some Kroil Oil on it so it could creep down between the tube and the C and maybe loosen some **** up. Then I made two cuts opposite each other through the tube, then used a grinder and ground down at a 45 until I saw the faint signs of a crack on the backside. Then it was just a matter of using the hammer to smack out the two sides.

After some grinding and one hit with the hammer...
