Firing folks

How you going going to get fired on your day off , Craig ?

That's what they :JRich: were laughing at the guy about. Our CEO asked me what was so funny so I had to tell him. 56 year old white dudes don't think Friday is that funny!

Ice Cube not Ice T but it its not like it matters hahaha

As a Safety Man, you can't give an employee any heads up that they will be heading out of the gate. One main reason is if they do get wind, then they will usually fake a trip and fall so they can sue the company. Safety records are huge in industry, one person who has an axe to grind can screw up hundreds of days of hard work by the rest of the company.

The only thing I would have changed is I would have never let them get on company property, I fire or ROF them at the time clock, take their ID badges, shake their hand and tell them I hope it all goes well for them.

Slight derail- I own my own business and hire and fire more people In a month than most of you in a year. I have been extremely lucky and never fired someone who wants to work, I pride myself on that. In this day and age if you are willing to work beside me I will find you a position. If you think I'm full of it, come visit me. I'll show you two 400 pounders, an old lady, and multiple stages of ignorance I have on payroll. But, anyone of them have my back and they all know I can do it with them or out them.

Sounds like you did it right. Throw it out there, so that there is no confusion, then help out the best you can.

The first time I fired someone I was managing a valet service. My employee was stealing out of cars. I wrote "you are fired" on some quarters and put them in cup holder. Had the employee come in to office and empty his pockets. Best day of my life, I literary couldn't stop laughing when I paid him off.
Moral of the story- DONT EVER USE VALET

Thank you for correcting me.

I am probably having a little too much fun watching all the :JRich: come up and try to get free air. We have the hose on the fuel island but no air chuck. It is entertaining cause I have a sign that says "Free Air for our Customers. Our customers are folks who buy things from us, not folks who use our air and buy nothing"

I had a smartass employee that was tired of working one day Fire himself, so I agreed. Haven't seen him since. :****:

I used to work for this no-spine boss who would take anything from anyone. He actually promoted me to be his assistant because he knew I didn't take **** from anyone and would get rid of some of the riff-raff that we needed to get rid of. The way it would work is that I would establish a case against a loser and he would fire them once I convince him. Well we had this really big , mean rugby player working for us and he was BY FAR our worst EE. He didn't do **** and he was DELIBERATELY rude to customers. He was that stereotypical jock that would just sit behind the counter with his feet up when a customer came, give them a mean look, and literally tell the customer to **** off. Well my boss was super-scared of him and I knew getting him to fire him would be difficult. The jock out lasted all the others because my boss kept putting it off but I finally convinced him to do it. Well his office had glass walls so you could see everything that would happen in there. There were also cameras with audio recording. We all expected the jock to go nuclear when it happened so we were all looking in the windows. We saw my boss and him talking and then my boss hung his head down and the jock came walking out with this eat **** grin on his face. I asked my boss what happened and he said he decided against it. I figured that sounded weird so later on I went back to the recordings to find out what really happened. My boss told him that we were letting him go and the jock just looks him in the eye and goes, "No you're not." That's when my boss hung his head and he just goes, "OK, you're right." I couldn't believe it.

So the guy kept on treating customers like **** and I kept protesting to terminate him. It finally took all the other managers in the building getting tired of the guy treating them like **** to get rid of him. They all went to my boss's boss and told him it was them or the jock. My boss's boss finally made my boss let the guy go. ****ing pathetic.

Another funny one. I used to have a chick that would not put her cell phone down. It was a problem with everyone, but her especially. She would hide it in her bra, sock, anywhere, and then steal moments in the bathroom to text and call people. So I watched her go in the bathroom and had my brother text her number, "He girl, what's up?" She replied back, "Who is this?" while she was still in the bathroom. He forwarded me the text and I was waiting for her with it on my screen outside the bathroom when she opened the door. I just said, "Busted! You're fired."

Don't guess it gets any easier than that huh.

Priceless look on his face when I agreed. Even more when I told him I wasn't joking. :flipoff1:

I've got a few more employees that I hope follow suit. :****:

The division of the liquid gases, fab/paint shop I work in is shutting down November 30th and for some reason they gave us 8 months notice. It only affects 3 people but that kind of notice has been a big relief but still an extremly stressfull situation. No hurry to take the first job that comes along and good jobs are hard to find in our area.
Just so you know we are all still there doing our jobs to the best of our abilities. I know we live in an entitlement society but not all or even most people are POS sue happy as you seem to think.
I also realize it's business and not personal.

It's business. It's risk. It's reward. It's hard work. If it were easy everyone would own and operate a business. Making money isn't for the lazy or faint of heart in any capacity.

Having said that, who held the responsibility card for the failure? Who stepped up and dug in deep to resolve the issue? Did you expect the employees to correct the deficiencies? Did they even know there were deficiencies? Blaming the high school kid that pushes a broom or the skilled machinist that cranks out parts is terribly irresponsible. If that particular operation was loosing money, the manager should have been fired a long time ago. The sales force should have been counseled and/or fired a long time ago. If the business continues to fail after a valid effort from upper management then the employees should not have been surprised a bit about the closing.

If I'm going to pay you to hang and loose money we are going to go somewhere enjoyable to blow cash, not pretend like we are working.

We are a $80 million farm supply Coop. Tire shops make up about $1.5 million, the one I sold was a money pit from day 1 (40 years ago) and lost money every year but provided a service that large farmers and customers utilized so it was a loss that was acceptable. The problem is that the money is that commodity prices and higher input costs have driven money out of our industry, margins are shrinking and volume is shrinking due to the crop makeup, so we need to cut loose anything that is not pulling its own weight. By the time I got responsibility it was almost dead, but ultimately it's on my shoulders. I'm ok with it, I made the decision that was right for the entire business. I gave our CEO 2 options, one was close it and call it quits and 2 was invest $100k in it with equipment, personnel and marketing and hope it breaks even and he chose shut down. It's kinda like being the Dr on call when a patient that has been dying for days finally kicks the bucket. Was on your watch but you couldn't do anything about it.

I understand that not everyone is sue happy. You have to realize that because of the mass amount of those who are, protocols have been put in place the reduce the amount of liability at that given moment.

We did all this firing before year end and as I'm getting ready I'm seeing more and more the manager of this particular shop had no clue what he was doing. It blows my mind how someone can hide their ignorance for so long. The worst part is he is a friend of mine so I can't tell him.
